Mobile Mapping System

The Mobile Mapping System (MMS) is used to collect primary data on roads (their components and inventory) within the central technical register of roads. MMS technology has brought increased security, speed and quality of data collection in the field and at the other hand more demanding subsequent processing in office conditions.

The principle of using this technology is based on mobile terrestrial scanning and imaging of roads and their surrounding and subsequent display and processing of recorded data (point cloud data and photos) in the office in order to obtain all the necessary data.

BASIC PARTS:

The mobile mapping system consists of the following modules:

•    own mobile platform on a Toyota Land Cruiser carrier

•    Riegl VUX-1HA (2x lidar sensor)

•    4x 5 MPix cameras

•    Ladybug 5 (30 MPix panoramic camera)

•    VMX-DMI odometer (distance meter)

•    VMX-MH Applanix AP60 measuring head (GNSS/IMU)

•    VMX-CU control unit, 2x LCD monitors

•    software for recorded data managing (Riegl RiAcquire)

measurement parameters

•    ideal measurement vehicle speed 70 - 90 km/h (can be lower)

•    the laser beam of the scanner has a range of up to 150 m

•    scanning speed: 10 - 250 turns per second

•    maximum number of laser pulses/measured points per second: approx. 1,000,000

•    scanner measurement accuracy: 5 mm

•    road scanning every 5 meters or every second,

•    synchronous measurement with GNSS technology, IMU unit and odometer to improve the quality of measured data

data processing and evaluation:

Processing of measured primary data (point cloud data) is a process in which measured the data is transformed into suitable form for classified display, vectorization, i.e. effective further processing of them.

The result of data processing is a point cloud, which under optimal measurement conditions achieves an accuracy of up to 10 cm and panoramic images (360 °) of the road and the surrounding area with dimensions of 5400 x 2700 pixels. This data is stored in commonly used formats (e.g. JPEG for photos or LAS for point clouds), which are subsequently used in the evaluation of the given measured data.

The result of the evaluation of the processed data is a vector representation of the elements of the measured road (e.g. lanes, paved and unpaved shoulders, dividing strips, etc.) and its other components and inventory (vertical traffic signs, barriers and safety equipment, etc.), which are the content of the central technical register of roads.
