Description of the device:
The Skiddometer BV11 VI, measuring device from the Finnish company Moventor Oy, is used for pavement diagnostics - measuring and evaluating road roughness within the central technical register of roads.
The Skiddometer BV11 VI (Vehicle Integration) is the latest innovation in longitudinal friction measurement.
The measuring unit itself is integrated into the Ford Ranger vehicle and is controlled through an electric lifting system and a TSC (Touch Screen Computer system).
The TSC control system consists of a tablet with the Android operating system (with the Skiddometer BV11 application for communication with the measuring unit), an interface box, a databox and cabling.
The TSC system also includes a cloud service Web Service.
Skiddometer - road roughness measurement
The Skiddometer BV11 VI consists of the following basic components:
- a 650 liter water tank (1) with an automatic electric water pump
- a tool box (2)
- a lifting mechanism (3)
- a measuring unit (4)
Skiddometer - basic parts
Source : Skiddometer BV 11 VI & TSC Operation and Maintenance Manual
- an infrared thermometer for measuring the road surface temperature
- a TSC control system located in the vehicle
Skiddometer - measuring unit
The measuring unit itself (4) weighs 180 kg and has three wheels. Two side guide/reference wheels and one measuring wheel.
A T-49 type tire with an inflation pressure of 1.4 bar is primarily used for the measuring wheel, but a T-520 type tire with an inflation pressure of 7.0 bar can also be used. The tires of the reference wheels are inflated to a pressure of 1.7 bar.
Measurement parameters:
- slip 17%
- water film thickness is 0.5 mm for T-49 tire and 1 mm for T-520 tire
- air temperature during measurement must be more than 4 °C, except for measurement for immediate assessment of surface condition and special measurement on ice
- possibility of measurement in the speed range of 20 - 130 km/h, if conditions on the measured section allow, measurement is performed at a reference speed of 80 km/h
Obtained pavement characteristics:
- coefficient of longitudinal friction Mu (-)
TP 025 (technical regulation) – Measurement and assessment of road roughness using SKIDDOMETER BV11 and PROFILOGRAPH GE devices (effective from 1.1.2022) determines the principles for measuring and evaluating road roughness using the SKIDDOMETER BV11 measuring device for determining skidd friction and the PROFILOGRAPH device for determining surface macrotexture.
